TL;DR
- Julian Jaynes correctly perceived that the introspective “I” is constructed rather than metaphysically given, but his strong date of roughly 1000 BCE mistakes a late literary reorganization of selfhood for its origin. His own neglected “weak” chronology—beginning around 12,000 BCE—was much closer to the truth (Jaynes, “The Auguries of Science”).
- Eve Theory identifies a better explanandum: not perception, wakefulness, pain, or raw experience, but the recursive autobiographical agent who represents itself through time. Culture–gene feedback of this general kind is now well established (Laland, Odling-Smee, and Myles 2010; Heyes 2018).
- Archaeology favors neither an instantaneous “human revolution” nor a Bronze Age invention. It shows ancient symbolic precursors, repeated losses and local efflorescences, and a later thickening of cumulative culture—precisely the mosaic expected from a difficult cultural innovation before demographic and developmental stabilization (McBrearty and Brooks 2000; Powell, Shennan, and Thomas 2009).
- Childhood development looks like Eve Theory in miniature: mirror self-recognition, personal pronouns, pretend play, autobiographical memory, temporal self-continuity, and narrative identity emerge in partially separable stages and depend heavily on social interaction (Lewis and Ramsay 2004; Nelson and Fivush 2004).
- Cutler’s deepest advance is the derivation of selfhood from conscience. Jaynes asks how divine authorization became inner speech; Cutler asks how an animal became the owner of an action at all. The self emerges when a social organism recursively models how others see it and becomes answerable for its choices.
- Myths, initiation rites, sacred voices, death-and-rebirth ceremonies, pronouns, and serpent complexes are not individually decisive evidence. Their value lies in their covariance as possible residues of a transmission system. Myth is not a tape recorder, but neither is it white noise (da Silva and Tehrani 2016; Nunn and Reid 2016).
- The theory’s architecture is considerably stronger than its ornaments. A culturally bootstrapped recursive self is likely; a terminal-Pleistocene or early-Holocene phase of rapid diffusion is plausible; women-first transmission is intriguing; a single worldwide Snake Cult and venom-induced awakening remain unproven. This hierarchy is a strength, not an embarrassment: Eve Theory can shed weak auxiliary claims without losing its core.

Julian Jaynes’s great discovery was not that Homeric heroes were unconscious automata. It was that the familiar introspective person—the private narrator who says I, rehearses motives, places itself in an imagined past and future, and experiences decisions as its own—might be made rather than found.
His great mistake was chronological and causal. He mistook the earliest archive dense enough to show a dramatic reorganization of selfhood for the origin of selfhood itself.
The Bronze Age was not the birth of the self. It was one of its bureaucratizations.
Eve Theory of Consciousness retains Jaynes’s central heresy while discarding the historical machinery that made his theory untenable. It moves the problem into deep prehistory; separates primitive experience from recursive autobiographical agency; replaces a binary breakdown with cultural bootstrapping; supplies developmental and evolutionary mechanisms; and treats myth, ritual, language, archaeology, and population history as partially independent records of one transformation.
The result is not merely a less eccentric version of Jaynes. It is a more realistic theory of what kind of thing a human self is, how such a thing could arise, how it could spread, and why it would eventually appear innate.
Jaynes supplied the Copernican insult: the inner sovereign is not primordial.
Cutler supplies the Darwinian machinery.
What Did Julian Jaynes Get Right—and Where Did He Go Wrong?#
Jaynes defined consciousness narrowly. He did not mean perception, learning, sensation, attention, responsiveness, or wakefulness. He meant a metaphorically constructed mental space inhabited by an analog “I”: an imagined observer who narratizes events, simulates possibilities, and treats thoughts as objects within an interior theater (Jaynes 1976).
That distinction was brilliant. It anticipated later separations between minimal and narrative selfhood, first-order access and metacognition, and ordinary memory versus autonoetic remembrance. Jaynes understood that a creature may perceive, plan, learn, communicate, and solve difficult problems without possessing the particular inward architecture modern people casually call consciousness.
He also understood that language does more than express an already completed mind. Metaphor, narrative, and social instruction can construct new spaces of cognition. Daniel Dennett therefore described Jaynes’s project sympathetically as a kind of “software archaeology”: an attempt to reconstruct extinct cognitive organizations from surviving cultural outputs (Dennett 1986).
Those are enormous achievements.
But Jaynes then attached them to an implausibly late historical discontinuity. In his strong account, civilizations before the late second millennium BCE were governed by auditory commands experienced as gods. Social dislocation, migration, writing, political collapse, and the failure of divine voices then forced people to invent introspective consciousness, approximately around 1000 BCE in the ancient Near East (Jaynes, “The Auguries of Science”).
The problem is not merely that the date seems late. The causal sequence is reversed.
Jaynes treats the collapse of a peculiar form of religious authorization as the cause of recursive selfhood. It is more likely that increasingly recursive, autobiographical, socially accountable persons created new problems of authorization—and then remodeled gods, laws, states, divination, confession, and literature around those problems.
His own afterword contains the germ of a better theory. Jaynes considered a “weak” version in which consciousness began around 12,000 BCE and coexisted with bicameral organization for millennia. He rejected it as “almost undisprovable” because consciousness could then be pushed indefinitely backward whenever contrary evidence appeared (Jaynes, “The Auguries of Science”).
This weak version is strikingly close to Eve Theory’s historical territory. The difference is that Cutler does not merely move Jaynes’s date backward. He supplies the missing causal architecture and proposes independent classes of evidence by which a graded prehistoric transition might be investigated.
Jaynes had the right ontological scandal and the wrong evolutionary story.
What Is the Strongest Defensible Version of Eve Theory of Consciousness?#
Eve Theory is best understood as a nested family of hypotheses rather than one indivisible claim. Its weakest layer is also its strongest scientifically: recursive autobiographical selfhood is a culturally scaffolded cognitive construction that emerged after older forms of perception, social cognition, language, and minimal selfhood.
Around this core lie progressively more historical claims.

This separation matters. “A serpent complex has not been proven” is not an argument that autobiographical selfhood develops culturally. “A single woman cannot be identified archaeologically” is not an argument that a successful cultural lineage had no founder. “There is no gene for consciousness” is not an argument against selection on the many capacities required to acquire and inhabit a recursive social world.
A Memetic Eve need not have been the first hominin ever to experience a fleeting recursive thought. She need only have belonged to the first lineage that made the innovation stable, teachable, reproducible, and evolutionarily consequential.1
Writing, fire-making, musical traditions, religious movements, and scientific paradigms can all have many abortive precursors before one lineage becomes historically fecund. Cultural ancestry is not the same thing as metaphysical priority.
The strongest defensible Eve Theory therefore says:
- Ancient humans possessed rich phenomenal lives, perception, memory, social awareness, and perhaps intermittent higher-order self-representation.
- Recursive autobiographical agency was nevertheless a difficult developmental achievement rather than a universally preinstalled module.
- At some point, one or more traditions discovered reliable cultural procedures for producing, naming, narrating, and morally stabilizing that agency.
- These traditions spread because recursive persons and recursive societies possessed formidable advantages in planning, deception, cooperation, teaching, reputation management, and cumulative culture.
- The cultural niche subsequently altered selection, making acquisition earlier, more reliable, and increasingly effortless.
- Later historical transformations—agriculture, cities, writing, states, literacy, philosophy—reformatted an already ancient self rather than creating it ex nihilo.
That architecture is not only more plausible than Jaynes’s. It resembles the way major evolutionary transitions actually occur.
How Does Eve Theory of Consciousness Improve on the Bicameral Mind?#
The contrast becomes clearest when the two theories are aligned question by question.

Jaynes’s theory is fundamentally a replacement story: divine command is replaced by introspective narration.
Eve Theory is a bootstrapping story: models of other minds become models of one’s own mind; those models alter behavior; behavior creates new social environments; those environments reward better self-modeling; and the entire system feeds back through culture, childhood, institutions, and selection.
Jaynes describes a collapse.
Cutler describes a runaway attractor.
Does Eve Theory Identify the Right Kind of Consciousness?#
Much confusion disappears once “consciousness” is decomposed.
Dehaene, Lau, and Kouider distinguish unconscious processing from globally available information and from self-monitoring or metacognition. In their terminology, C1 is information made globally available for flexible use, while C2 is the capacity to monitor one’s own processing—to know, with varying reliability, what one knows (Dehaene, Lau, and Kouider 2017).
Shaun Gallagher distinguishes the minimal self, the immediate first-personal organization of experience, from the narrative self, the temporally extended identity constituted through memory and story (Gallagher 2000).
Endel Tulving distinguishes ordinary semantic knowledge from autonoetic consciousness: the ability to re-experience oneself as an agent located in subjective time (Tulving 2002).
Eve Theory’s real target lies near the intersection of C2, autonoesis, narrative identity, recursive mentalizing, and ownership of action. It concerns the organism that can represent not merely a world, but itself representing the world; not merely an event, but itself as the same accountable subject before, during, and after the event.2
That is a much better target than consciousness tout court.
It allows ancient humans—and many nonhuman animals—to possess perception, affect, pain, expectation, memory, intentional action, and a minimal point of view without already possessing the fully recursive autobiographical self characteristic of literate modern adults. Eve Theory does not require a planet populated by philosophical zombies until the late Pleistocene.
A shell bead can be ancient without the memoir-writing self already being modern.
A hunter can plan without narrating his entire life as the project of an interior protagonist.
A mother can recognize her child, mourn, anticipate, teach, and dream without representing herself through the full recursive grammar of moral and autobiographical agency.
Jaynes understood part of this. His analog “I” resembles the narrative self more than raw phenomenality. But by calling that construct simply consciousness, he created a terminological morass. Readers are continually forced to remember that conscious perception, in ordinary usage, is not what his book denies.
Cutler’s language has not always been perfectly disciplined either. “Consciousness,” “self-awareness,” “recursion,” “sapience,” “conscience,” and “inner life” sometimes bleed into one another. The theory becomes substantially stronger when its explanandum is fixed as recursive autobiographical agency.3
This refinement does not weaken Eve Theory. It rescues it from the impossible burden of explaining why anything ever felt like anything and lets it explain a more historically tractable achievement: how experience acquired an owner extended through time.
Why Is Eve Theory More Faithful to Evolution Than Jaynes?#
Jaynes asks a social catastrophe to produce a novel mental ontology within a few centuries.
Eve Theory decomposes that miracle into a sequence of ordinary evolutionary processes:
- Social modeling: hominins become increasingly skilled at tracking intentions, alliances, obligations, attention, deception, and reputation.
- Recursive reuse: some of the machinery used to model other agents becomes directed toward the organism’s own thoughts, motives, and anticipated social appearance.
- Symbolic stabilization: language supplies names, pronouns, metaphors, stories, and explicit distinctions that make the recursive model easier to preserve and teach.
- Institutional transmission: rites, kinship systems, sacred narratives, discipline, confession, law, and initiation stabilize culturally preferred forms of personhood.
- Niche construction: recursive society rewards foresight, self-control, strategic deception, teaching, autobiographical consistency, and sensitivity to judgment.
- Genetic accommodation: selection favors developmental systems that acquire the culturally demanded architecture earlier, more reliably, and with lower instructional cost.
Nothing in this sequence requires one mutation for “the soul.” Selection can act on working memory, language acquisition, social attention, inhibition, temporal cognition, metacognition, emotional regulation, suggestibility, learning biases, childhood plasticity, and the duration of development. The target is a distributed developmental system, not a Cartesian organ.4
Culture–gene feedback is no longer a speculative add-on to evolutionary theory. Cultural practices can create durable selection pressures, alter developmental environments, and change which phenotypes reproduce successfully (Laland, Odling-Smee, and Myles 2010). Cecilia Heyes’s theory of “cognitive gadgets” similarly argues that distinctively human cognitive mechanisms can be assembled through culturally organized development rather than specified in full by genetic evolution (Heyes 2018).
Eve Theory combines these insights in an especially potent way. Recursive selfhood begins as cultural software, but successful software changes the ecological and reproductive value of hardware. The distinction between biology and culture becomes a loop.
The modern autobiographical self is neither a timeless essence nor a Bronze Age invention. It is a culturally scaffolded recursive control system that became an evolutionary niche.
This also explains how a transition can be both sudden and gradual.
A recursive system may display threshold behavior. Once a model can represent itself as part of what it models, new loops become possible: I think that she thinks that I intended…; I remember that I used to believe…; I imagine the person I will become judging the action I perform now. A small increase in language, working memory, instruction, or social pressure may push an individual across a qualitative threshold.
But individuals do not cross together. Traditions do not spread instantly. Children differ. Populations meet, merge, resist, imitate, and forget. A phase change may therefore be sharp in cognitive state-space while being smeared across archaeological time.5
This is precisely where “Memetic Eve” becomes coherent. A founder need not instantaneously transform humanity. She or her community need only establish the first self-propagating developmental tradition. Once that tradition has even a modest cultural or reproductive advantage, it can expand, hybridize with other populations, and eventually become species-typical.
Jaynes’s account leaves us with a discontinuity.
Eve Theory gives the discontinuity an evolutionary metabolism.
Does Archaeology Support Eve Theory of Consciousness?#
Archaeology cannot excavate a first-person perspective. It recovers behavior, materials, spatial organization, bodies, and traces of learning. Any inference from those traces to phenomenology is underdetermined.6
Even so, the archaeological record strongly disfavors Jaynes’s Bronze Age origin and broadly favors Eve Theory’s staged structure.

The earliest beads and pigments are important corrections to any version of Eve Theory that speaks too categorically of an absence of symbolic or recursive behavior before 40,000 or 50,000 years ago. Complex social symbolism has far deeper roots.
But these discoveries do not establish that the entire modern self-complex was present 142,000 years ago. Archaeologists infer personal ornamentation from perforated shells because they were selected, modified, transported, and probably displayed. That supports social identity and convention. It does not reveal whether their wearers experienced themselves as autobiographical narrators extended through moral time.
The more revealing pattern is the mosaic. Traits once bundled under “behavioral modernity” appear at different times, in different places, and sometimes disappear. McBrearty and Brooks’s “revolution that wasn’t” replaced a sharp European cognitive revolution with a prolonged African accumulation of technologies, symbols, and social practices (McBrearty and Brooks 2000).
Demographic models likewise show how culturally complex practices can be gained or lost depending on population size, connectivity, and opportunities for high-fidelity transmission (Powell, Shennan, and Thomas 2009). The details of particular demographic models remain contested, but their general lesson is secure: an innovation’s archaeological absence need not mean biological incapacity, and its appearance need not mean a new mutation.
This is extraordinarily congenial to Eve Theory.
A culturally bootstrapped recursive self should initially be rare, fragile, expensive to teach, and vulnerable to demographic loss. Its components should appear before the complete package. Some populations should elaborate it while others retain different organizations of mind and personhood. The eventual transition should look less like a light switching on than a set of embers repeatedly catching, dying, and finally becoming an ecological fire.
Colin Renfrew’s “sapient paradox” names the broader problem: anatomically modern brains long preceded the spectacular expansion of symbolic, institutional, and technological complexity associated with later prehistory (Renfrew 2008). Eve Theory supplies a possible missing variable. The relevant hardware may have existed long before cultural procedures discovered how to recursively organize it.
The Egyptian evidence creates a different problem for Jaynes. The Dispute Between a Man and His Ba, preserved in a Middle Kingdom manuscript, dramatizes a person arguing with an aspect of himself over suffering, death, reputation, and the desirability of continued life. Its philology and interpretation are difficult, and ba is not simply equivalent to a modern soul. But a text around 1900 BCE that explicitly stages internal division is poor evidence for a species-wide absence of introspective mind until roughly 1000 BCE.
More generally, ancient Egyptian autobiographical inscriptions display first-person moral self-presentation well before Jaynes’s proposed transition, even if formulaic conventions prevent us from reading them as transparent diaries (Lichtheim 1988).
The first period that leaves abundant introspective prose is not necessarily the period that invented introspection. It is the first period with the media, institutions, genres, preservation conditions, and social incentives to make introspection legible to us.
Jaynes dated the mind partly by the literacy horizon.
Cutler looks behind it.
Does Child Development Reconstruct the Cultural Birth of the Self?#
Children do not arrive as miniature Cartesian autobiographers.
They possess perception, affect, preferences, memory, agency, social responsiveness, and an embodied point of view long before they can recognize themselves in mirrors, use personal pronouns fluently, narrate coherent memories, distinguish their former beliefs from their present ones, or conceive of an enduring life story.
Mirror self-recognition typically emerges during the second year but varies substantially among children and cultural settings. Lewis and Ramsay found that its development was related to personal-pronoun use and pretend play, suggesting that bodily self-recognition, linguistic self-reference, and secondary representation develop as an interconnected cluster rather than as one instantaneous revelation (Lewis and Ramsay 2004).
A longitudinal cross-cultural study of 276 toddlers found that the timing of mirror self-recognition varied across sociocultural contexts and was associated with caregivers’ emphasis on autonomy. Pronoun use remained positively associated with recognition across the sampled settings (Kärtner et al. 2012).
Autobiographical memory develops later and even more socially. Katherine Nelson and Robyn Fivush’s developmental model integrates memory, language, temporal understanding, self–other differentiation, narrative structure, and conversations with caregivers. Children learn not merely to retain events but to organize events as things that happened to me, to place them in temporal sequence, and to explain them in culturally intelligible forms (Nelson and Fivush 2004).
This is close to an ontogenetic demonstration of Eve Theory’s central mechanism.
The autobiographical self is assembled through repeated interactions in which other people ask what happened, correct sequences, supply motives, name emotions, attribute responsibility, distinguish fantasy from memory, and place the child inside a shared family history. The child learns to see herself from outside and to reconstruct that externally visible person from within.
Ontogeny does not literally recapitulate phylogeny.7 Modern children inherit brains, institutions, languages, and caregivers already transformed by the history Eve Theory seeks to explain. Development cannot therefore reproduce the first invention in pristine form.
But ontogeny reveals the dependency structure of the phenotype.
If adult autobiographical selfhood were an indivisible, fully specified biological faculty, one would not expect its components to emerge in staggered relation to pronouns, narrative interaction, pretend play, autonomy socialization, temporal language, and caregiver memory talk. The developmental record instead resembles a culturally scaffolded construction built atop older capacities.
Jaynes recognized the importance of language acquisition but concentrated on metaphorical mind-space. Cutler sees the larger developmental niche: the self is taught through every practice by which a community tells a child what kind of being she is.
Can Culture Invent Cognitive Machinery and Then Reshape Biology?#
One of the most perceptive features of Eve Theory is its refusal to choose between a biological and cultural origin.
The usual debate is sterile. Either selfhood is treated as an evolved genetic adaptation that appeared when a mutation altered the brain, or it is treated as a free-floating cultural convention imposed on biologically unchanged minds. Eve Theory proposes a sequence in which both descriptions become true at different stages.
Cecilia Heyes argues that some distinctively human cognitive mechanisms are “cognitive gadgets”: culturally inherited systems constructed during development from older learning capacities (Heyes 2018). Reading is an obvious example of a recently invented practice recruiting neural systems that did not evolve specifically for literacy. More controversially, Heyes extends the model to imitation, mindreading, and other social-cognitive skills.
Eve Theory applies this logic to autobiographical selfhood. The first recursive self-system need not have been genetically specified. It could have been assembled through symbolic interaction, learned attention, narrative, ritual, and repeated attribution of agency.
But Cutler goes beyond ordinary cultural constructivism. Once a community depends on recursive persons, developmental success becomes fitness-relevant. Individuals who learn the system more readily may be better negotiators, planners, teachers, coalition partners, deceivers, parents, ritual specialists, and interpreters of norms. Those unable to acquire it may be infantilized, excluded, killed, or outcompeted.
Genetic accommodation can then stabilize a phenotype originally evoked or organized by environmental inputs. The evolutionary result need not be hardwired content. Selection may instead favor plasticity, sensitivity to particular cues, prolonged childhood, social motivation, working-memory capacity, or biases that make the culturally desired construction easier to learn (Jablonka, Ginsburg, and Dor 2019).
This is a much better explanation for the self’s peculiar dual nature.
It feels innate because modern children acquire it inside a world saturated with the relevant cues and may inherit biological accommodations to that world. Yet its contents remain radically cultural: names, moral categories, kinship roles, gender, religious identity, property, vocation, nationality, and the acceptable boundaries of the person.
The self is neither just software nor just hardware. It is developmental firmware produced by a long feedback loop.
Direct genetic evidence for selection specifically on “recursive selfhood” does not yet exist. Candidate genes are almost hopelessly nonspecific, and a selective sweep affecting cognition would not identify the cultural pressure that caused it. Y-chromosome replacements or sex-biased demographic expansions would be compatible with many histories besides Eve Theory.
Likewise, breeder-equation calculations in Cutler’s essays should be read as demonstrations of plausibility, not estimates of an actual prehistoric response to selection.8
But the absence of a trait-specific genomic signature does not damage the general mechanism. Culture-driven selection is real. Developmental accommodation is real. Human cognition is unusually dependent on socially constructed niches. Eve Theory unites these facts into a historically generative model rather than leaving “culture” as an unexplained deus ex machina.
Why Is Conscience a Better Origin for the Self Than Hallucinated Commands?#
The most important extension of Eve Theory may be Consequences of Conscience, because it identifies a plausible selection pressure for recursive selfhood.
Jaynes’s central problem is authorization: what tells the organism what to do? In bicameral society, the answer is an auditory god. In conscious society, the individual narratizes alternatives and authorizes itself.
But before asking how an organism authorizes its actions, one must explain how actions came to possess an owner.
Cutler’s answer begins with social cognition.
Hominin survival increasingly depended on modeling other agents: what they had seen, what they intended, whom they trusted, what they remembered, whether they were deceiving, how they would retaliate, and what reputation they assigned to oneself. Shared intentionality and cooperative activity created unusually powerful incentives to coordinate perspectives and represent jointly held commitments (Tomasello et al. 2005).
Reputation magnified the stakes. Human cooperation is partly sustained by social visibility, partner choice, gossip, punishment, and the circulation of information about character (Wu, Balliet, and Van Lange 2016). An individual must therefore model not only her opinion of another person but the other person’s model of her.
This creates the seed of recursion:
She sees me. She interprets what I did. She thinks I intended it. Others will hear her account. The person they condemn is me. I remain that person tomorrow.
The self can emerge as a compressed model of the socially visible organism—a model that predicts how one’s remembered actions will be interpreted by other minds.
Once that model becomes inwardly available, reputation becomes conscience. The group’s possible judgments are simulated even in solitude. One can feel watched without an observer, accused without an accuser, ashamed before exposure, or guilty for an intention no one else discovered.
Conscience is society rendered recursive.
This is more causally adequate than Jaynes’s emphasis on command hallucinations. Social evaluation is ancient, continuous, ubiquitous, and fitness-relevant. It supplies a reason why recursive self-representation would be adaptive before cities, states, or writing. It also explains why self-awareness is so often entwined with morality, shame, secrecy, nakedness, death, obligation, and the gaze of others.
Genesis becomes unusually legible under this interpretation.
The first humans acquire knowledge of good and evil; their eyes open; they become aware of their nakedness; they hide from an observing authority; they assign blame; they discover toil, sexuality, reproduction, and mortality. This is not merely an allegory of abstract knowledge. It is a remarkably compressed phenomenology of becoming a morally visible self.
The point is not that Genesis is a literal transcript of the first awakening. Its final form is far too late, and its motifs have complex Near Eastern histories. The point is that the story’s elements cohere naturally if recursive selfhood first presented itself as accountability: I am the being who did this, who can be seen, who might have acted otherwise, and who will die.
The first “I” may have been accusatory before it was contemplative.
Jaynes saw that gods once authorized action. Cutler sees the deeper transition: an organism internalized the social field and became the defendant in its own tribunal.
What Do Auditory Voices Really Tell Us About Ancient Minds?#
Jaynes’s treatment of voices remains his most vivid contribution. Ancient gods speak. Oracles speak. Statues speak. Ancestors command. Prophets hear. Possession temporarily changes the apparent source of action. Modern people sometimes experience thoughts as alien voices.
He inferred that voice-hearing had once been humanity’s ordinary executive system.
The evidence supports a narrower and more interesting conclusion.
Source monitoring is the metacognitive ability to distinguish internally generated from externally generated information. Meta-analytic research finds that hallucinations and psychosis can involve biases in identifying the origin of thoughts, memories, or perceived signals, although effects vary by task and diagnostic group (Brookwell, Bentall, and Varese 2013; Damiani et al. 2022).
Voice-hearing is also culturally interpreted. Tanya Luhrmann and colleagues compared voice-hearing among people with psychosis in the United States, India, and Ghana. The American participants more often described violent commands and a hostile intrusion into the private mind, whereas participants in India and Ghana more often reported relational or socially embedded voices. The study was small, but it demonstrates that a common class of experience can be organized by different models of mind and personhood (Luhrmann et al. 2015).
That finding is more congenial to Eve Theory than to strong bicamerality.
If cultures teach different boundaries between thought, voice, spirit, ancestor, and self, then auditory experience is not a simple fossil of one extinct neurological regime. It is an unstable interface between endogenous cognition and culturally supplied source categories.
Modern voice-hearers do not lack autobiographical selves. Some voices are conversational, some commanding, some comforting, some traumatic, some recognized as self-generated, and some experienced as radically alien. Inner speech itself varies considerably in form and frequency (Hurlburt, Heavey, and Kelsey 2013).
Eve Theory can preserve Jaynes’s central perception without accepting his overreach. Sacred voices may indeed record an age when internally generated social models were more readily attributed to gods, ancestors, masks, animals, or ritual authorities. The stabilization of selfhood may have included new conventions for claiming inner speech as mine.
But voices need not have been the operating system of an otherwise nonconscious species.
They may have been the bootloader through which social authority entered the emerging self.
Can Myths Preserve the Prehistory of Personhood?#
Cutler’s willingness to treat mythology as historical evidence is more perceptive than the modern reflex to classify myths as either literal chronicles or arbitrary fantasies.
Cultural transmission is neither perfect copying nor unconstrained invention. Stories mutate, recombine, adapt to local ecologies, and acquire new theological meanings. Yet comparative phylogenetic methods can sometimes recover vertical inheritance and distinguish it, imperfectly, from borrowing and convergence. Da Silva and Tehrani, for example, reported that several Indo-European folktales may preserve lineages extending deep into language-family prehistory (da Silva and Tehrani 2016).
Patrick Nunn and Nicholas Reid have argued that Aboriginal Australian oral traditions preserve memories of coastal inundation dating to postglacial sea-level rise more than 7,000 years ago (Nunn and Reid 2016). Particular identifications remain debatable, but the broader lesson is important: oral tradition can sometimes conserve a structured memory far beyond the lifespan of ordinary eyewitness testimony.
Myth is not a tape recorder, but neither is it white noise.9
Eve Theory asks whether recurrent mythic bundles might preserve transformations in personhood:
- eyes opening or the acquisition of special sight;
- knowledge of good and evil;
- shame, nakedness, secrecy, or concealment;
- a woman who transmits forbidden knowledge;
- a serpent, dragon, or chthonic being;
- the origin of language, names, law, marriage, agriculture, or death;
- separation from animals, gods, or an original undifferentiated world;
- ritual killing followed by rebirth;
- a voice-producing sacred object;
- admission to adulthood through terror, instruction, and revelation.
Any one motif is cheap. Serpents independently invite symbolism because they shed skins, disappear underground, carry venom, move without limbs, inhabit water and earth, and seem to die and revive. Death-and-rebirth imagery can arise wherever initiates change social status. “Opening the eyes” is an obvious metaphor for learning.
The historical signal, if one exists, lies in the bundle, its internal order, its geographical structure, its linguistic associations, and its fit with known pathways of population movement and contact.
This is where initiation becomes crucial.
Arnold van Gennep showed that rites of passage commonly organize transitions through separation, liminality, and incorporation (van Gennep 1960). Victor Turner emphasized the dissolution and reconstruction of social identity within liminal states (Turner 1969).
Experimental and field research now indicates that intense rituals can produce durable identity fusion, increased commitment, and costly prosocial behavior (Xygalatas et al. 2013; Whitehouse 2018).
Rituals are therefore not merely beliefs performed. They are developmental environments with knives.
Isolation, terror, fasting, pain, masks, sacred voices, renaming, secrecy, death imagery, instruction, and rebirth can disrupt an existing identity and install a new one. Such practices are entirely plausible as technologies for transmitting culturally specific forms of selfhood.
This is one of Cutler’s most decisive improvements over Jaynes.
For Jaynes, religion largely preserves or attempts to recover lost bicameral authorization. For Eve Theory, religion can be the pedagogy by which recursive personhood is induced, disciplined, and inherited. Gods do not merely linger after the voices fade. They help manufacture the kind of being capable of hearing a voice as conscience, temptation, revelation, or thought.
Bullroarers and analogous voice-producing instruments become especially suggestive in this context. A hidden human operator produces a superhuman voice; initiates are first terrorized by it, then shown its mechanism, then entrusted with reproducing it. At minimum, this is a ritual lesson in source attribution, secrecy, representation, and the manufacture of sacred agency. In the stronger reconstruction, such instruments belong to an ancient transmission complex described in Eve Theory of Consciousness v4.
The serpent complex remains less secure. Its breadth is real, but breadth can reflect recurrent symbolic affordances as readily as common descent. The serpent may be a palimpsest rather than a fingerprint.
Venom is still more speculative. Psychoactive or physiologically transformative substances could have intensified initiation, terror, dissociation, visionary experience, or the perceived death and rebirth of the initiate. But a plausible pharmacological role is not evidence that venom caused recursive consciousness. Without residues, securely identified implements, direct descriptions, or a geographically and chronologically coherent tradition, venom should remain an auxiliary hypothesis.
The strong theory becomes more credible when it refuses to make the serpent carry the entire world on its back.
Is the Women-First Hypothesis Plausible?#
The claim that women pioneered recursive selfhood initially sounds like mythology masquerading as science. Properly formulated, however, it is neither absurd nor gratuitous.
Several modern datasets find small average female advantages in capacities adjacent to Eve Theory’s proposed transition.
A very large cross-national study reported an average female advantage on the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test across much of the sampled lifespan and many countries, using a discovery sample of more than 300,000 people. The article has since received a formal correction, so country-level details should be interpreted from the corrected record, but the broad average difference remains relevant as a hypothesis-generating observation (Greenberg et al. 2023; correction 2025).
A meta-analysis of nonverbal emotion recognition found a small average female advantage, approximately d = 0.19 (Thompson and Voyer 2014). A synthesis covering 13,783 children from ten non-English language communities found girls slightly ahead in early communicative gestures, productive vocabulary, and word combination (Eriksson et al. 2012).
These are overlapping distributions, not separate cognitive species.10 Present-day sex differences may reflect culture, biology, measurement, or their interaction, and cannot establish what happened in the Pleistocene.
Nevertheless, small average differences can matter near a nonlinear threshold. If recursive self-modeling requires several capacities to coincide—social attention, language, emotional inference, memory, teaching, and sensitivity to reputation—a modest shift in their joint distribution could produce a large asymmetry among the earliest pioneers.
The social ecology of motherhood and cooperative child-rearing also supplies a plausible selection context. Human infants are unusually dependent, and human mothers have often relied on alloparents. Cooperative breeding theories propose that this system intensified attentional monitoring, tolerance, prosocial motivation, and sensitivity to the intentions of multiple caregivers and dependents (Burkart, Hrdy, and van Schaik 2009).
Women may consequently have occupied social niches in which tracking subtle mental states, teaching immature minds, coordinating kin, and anticipating reputational consequences were unusually persistent demands.
None of this proves that one woman awakened first. It does something more modest but important: it raises the prior probability that a sex asymmetry existed and identifies mechanisms by which it could have arisen.
Cutler’s perceptiveness lies partly in asking the question at all.
The conventional prehistoric human is tacitly male: hunter, toolmaker, warrior, artist, shaman. Cognitive evolution is narrated as though innovations occurred in an undifferentiated species average, even when the daily selection pressures and developmental environments of males and females differed.
Eve Theory treats sex not as decorative mythology but as a testable axis of heterogeneity.
The name “Eve” should therefore be interpreted in three increasingly strong senses:
- Minimal: the first durable transmission lineage had founders.
- Intermediate: women were disproportionately represented among its pioneers and teachers.
- Strong: one identifiable female founder initiated the lineage from which modern recursive personhood descends.
The first claim is nearly unavoidable. The second is plausible. The third is possible but presently beyond demonstration.
That gradient should be preserved.
Can Pronouns Reveal the Prehistory of the Self?#
Pronouns are among Cutler’s most ingenious proposed cultural fossils.
The first-person pronoun publicly encodes a relation that the recursive self performs internally. It marks the current speaker as an indexical center and allows that center to be embedded in statements about belief, memory, intention, responsibility, possession, and time.
Developmentally, personal-pronoun use correlates with mirror self-recognition (Lewis and Ramsay 2004). This does not mean pronouns create self-recognition by themselves, but it supports the idea that linguistic self-reference and explicit self-representation develop together.
Historically, however, a pronoun is not a smoking gun.
Jaynes himself distinguished the ordinary bodily first person from the introspective analog “I.” A language can mark the speaker without its speakers possessing modern narrative selfhood. Deixis—this body speaking here—is not identical to autonoesis—the same morally responsible subject who remembers being a child and imagines being old.11
Pronouns can also be borrowed. Sarah Thomason and Daniel Everett document circumstances in which pronouns or pronominal paradigms pass between languages, especially under intense contact (Thomason and Everett 2001). This makes pronoun resemblance potentially useful for tracing diffusion, but dangerous as proof of genetic linguistic inheritance.
Long-range lexical reconstruction is itself contentious. Pagel and colleagues proposed that a subset of frequent words might preserve signals across exceptionally deep timescales (Pagel et al. 2013). Critics argued that short, frequent forms create false resemblances and that methods can discover “faces in the fire” when comparison sets and null models are insufficiently constrained (PNAS commentaries).
The better EToC test is therefore multivariate.

The prediction is not that one ancient pronoun root proves a single awakening. It is that a recursive-self package should possess historical structure. Its elements should cluster in time, geography, lineage, or contact networks more strongly than expected from universal communicative pressures alone.
This is also where Cutler’s psychometric work matters.
The Deep Lexical Hypothesis treats language as a distributed record of human social observation. Word meanings do not merely label the world; their relations can preserve latent structures generated by countless acts of comparison, judgment, and communication. Cutler’s work deriving personality structure from word vectors illustrates how high-dimensional cultural data can reveal patterns no individual speaker explicitly designed.
The same methodological instinct informs The AI Basis of the Eve Theory of Consciousness: culture can be treated as a noisy, distributed dataset whose latent variables may be recovered across languages, myths, rituals, and symbols.
This is a genuine advance over Jaynes.
Jaynes was a virtuoso reader of a small number of canonical texts. Cutler treats civilization itself as a psychometric instrument.
The danger is equally clear. High-dimensional cultural archives offer vast researcher degrees of freedom. With enough phonetic variants, symbolic motifs, translations, and geographic regions, nearly any desired pattern can be found. The remedy is not to abandon comparison but to formalize it:
- preregister phonetic and semantic thresholds;
- define comparison sets before inspecting outcomes;
- use geographic and phylogenetic controls;
- model contact explicitly;
- count failed predictions, not only matches;
- compare motif bundles against equally salient alternative bundles;
- distinguish inheritance, borrowing, and convergence;
- make datasets and coding decisions public.
Cutler’s method is more powerful than Jaynes’s precisely because it can become computational. It must therefore accept computational standards of error control.
Why Is Cutler’s Theory More Perceptive About the Sapient Paradox?#
The Sapient Paradox asks why anatomically and perhaps neurologically modern humans existed long before the sustained expansion of institutions, monuments, cities, writing, mathematical systems, and cumulative technologies.
Standard answers tend to choose one side of a false dichotomy.
Either the modern mind was complete hundreds of thousands of years ago and later cultural acceleration was merely demographic, or some late biological mutation produced modern cognition in a sudden revolution.
Memetic Eve Solves the Sapient Paradox offers a third possibility:
The biological capacity preceded the cultural algorithm that learned how to use it.
This possibility deserves more attention than it has received.
Modern computers can run algorithms their designers did not anticipate. Neural systems selected for social prediction, episodic memory, language, motor planning, and coalition management could likewise support a recursive self-model without having been genetically designed for autobiographical consciousness as such.
The initial innovation could then spread horizontally across genetically different populations. This is crucial. A beneficial mutation is constrained by reproduction and lineage. A beneficial cognitive practice can move through teaching, intermarriage, initiation, imitation, prestige, coercion, and religious conversion.
Cultural diffusion can therefore produce a species-wide transformation much faster than genetic replacement. Once widespread, it can create convergent selection across populations.
This resolves several otherwise awkward facts:
- deep biological continuity can coexist with late behavioral acceleration;
- symbolic precursors can long precede a stable package;
- innovations can appear, vanish, and reappear;
- genetic lineages can remain diverse while cultural organization converges;
- different societies can preserve different intermediate forms;
- later biological selection can make a once-difficult construction appear natural.
Cutler’s account of when recursion evolved is therefore strongest when it distinguishes prerequisites from stable recursive culture. Language, social cognition, episodic memory, symbols, and planning may all be ancient without the full autobiographical system already operating in its modern form.
The relevant archaeological question is not:
When do we first find anything symbolic?
It is:
When do mutually reinforcing signs of recursively organized personhood become dense, durable, transmissible, and demographically difficult to lose?
That is a harder question, but it is the right one.
Which Parts of Eve Theory Are Most Likely Correct?#
A theory this ambitious should not be judged as one undifferentiated proposition. Its components have radically different evidential standing.

Suppose no venom was involved. The developmental and gene–culture theory remains.
Suppose serpent cults arose repeatedly. The ritual transmission model remains.
Suppose the first durable recursive tradition was founded by a mixed-sex community rather than one woman. The founder and diffusion model remains.
Suppose there was no strong genetic accommodation after the transition. The culturally scaffolded account remains.
Jaynes’s historical theory is more brittle. If pre-1000 BCE people display introspective conflict, if voices were never the universal executive system, or if the relevant transformation occurred millennia earlier, the proposed breakdown ceases to explain the origin of consciousness.
Eve Theory is a better research program because its hypotheses can be peeled apart and tested separately.
Its correct architecture does not depend on every ornament being authentic.
How Could Eve Theory of Consciousness Be Falsified?#
Jaynes considered his early weak chronology almost impossible to disprove. Cutler’s advance will be complete only when EToC’s claims are translated into risky predictions.

Several methodological principles follow.
First, the date should not be allowed to float without penalty. Evidence of a fully integrated recursive-self package earlier than the proposed window must shift the model, not merely be relabeled a precursor.
Second, the strong historical reconstruction should predict new evidence. A theory that only redescribes already known serpent myths is weaker than one that identifies missing geographic intermediates, predicts an unattested ritual combination, or anticipates a lexical form later found in an old source.
Third, absence must be modeled. Archaeological silence, lexical loss, colonial suppression, and uneven ethnography create false negatives. But these cannot become universal solvents that dissolve every contradiction.
Fourth, myth comparisons need explicit null models. Serpents should be compared with other salient animals; death-and-rebirth rites with other status transitions; phonetic matches with the base rate expected among short sacred names.
Fifth, EToC should distinguish evidence for cultural construction, prehistoric diffusion, female-biased transmission, and one cultic lineage. These are not interchangeable.
A research program becomes scientific not when every claim is already proven but when errors in one layer can be detected without the entire theory retreating into mist.
Eve Theory can meet that standard.
Is Eve Theory the Theory Julian Jaynes Needed?#
Jaynes saw more clearly than most twentieth-century thinkers that the modern self is historically contingent. He recognized that inner space is metaphorical, that narrative reorganizes cognition, that voices expose the unstable boundary between thought and authority, and that ancient minds need not be organized like modern Western minds.
What he lacked was the conceptual vocabulary and empirical infrastructure now available:
- minimal versus narrative selfhood;
- metacognition and source monitoring;
- autonoetic memory;
- shared intentionality;
- culturally scaffolded development;
- cognitive gadgets;
- niche construction;
- gene–culture coevolution;
- genetic accommodation;
- demographic models of cultural loss;
- computational historical linguistics;
- cultural phylogenetics;
- quantitative cross-cultural psychology.
Cutler’s work is superior because it absorbs Jaynes’s insights into this larger reality.
It identifies a more precise phenotype.
It offers an adaptive pathway from social cognition to conscience.
It explains why the transition could be cognitively sharp but historically diffuse.
It gives culture causal power without making biology irrelevant.
It treats childhood as the machinery of transmission.
It interprets religion not merely as a lament for vanished voices but as an engine for producing persons.
It reads myth neither credulously nor dismissively, but as a degraded distributed archive.
It asks who first crossed the threshold, how sex differences might matter, how a tradition could spread, and what later selection would do to the descendants of its adopters.
It converts Jaynes’s literary provocation into an evolutionary research program.
The strongest claims of Eve Theory are not all equally secure. The language should become more exact; archaeological dates must remain corrigible; pronoun comparisons require stringent controls; a women-first pattern must not be inflated into a demonstrated founder; serpent distributions must be separated from convergent symbolism; and venom remains an enticing mechanism in search of direct evidence.
But these uncertainties lie mainly at the historical perimeter.
At the center is an idea of formidable explanatory power:
Human beings did not merely evolve bigger brains and then begin expressing an already completed modern mind. They entered culturally constructed recursive worlds, taught one another how to become the selves those worlds required, and were biologically transformed by the consequences.
That idea is more faithful to archaeology than Jaynes’s Bronze Age rupture, more faithful to development than an innate autobiographical ego, more faithful to evolution than a miraculous mutation, and more faithful to anthropology than the assumption that all people in all periods inhabited the same interior architecture.
Jaynes discovered the continent.
Cutler has begun to map its geology: the older strata beneath consciousness, the cultural fault lines along which recursion spread, the rituals that metamorphosed persons, and the selection pressures that made an acquired self feel eternal.
The map remains unfinished. Some of its most colorful provinces may prove to be terra fabulosa.
But the continent is real.
