Modernity has origins but no Genesis#
David Reich gave the genomic revolution the most ambitious possible title: Who We Are and How We Got Here. The title promises two answers. The book gives us one. It is a magnificent answer to how we got here. Ancient DNA reveals encounters with Neanderthals, vanished populations, migrations into Europe, India, East Asia, and the Americas, and the rejoining of Africa to a history once reconstructed mainly from Eurasian remains. Even the book’s first chapter, “How the Genome Explains Who We Are,” explains the phrase through ancestry, mixture, and population history. The title’s who means which populations contributed to us. A scholarly review compressed the book to six words: “The subject is the peopling of the world.” It closes on Reich’s vision of “an ancient DNA atlas of humanity” (Geoffrey McNicol 2018, pp. 645–646). An atlas is exactly what the genomic revolution has built: an unprecedented map of human traffic through time.
But there is another meaning so obvious that a child would ask it. What makes a human being human? When did that difference appear? How did an animal acquire an explicit self, become answerable for its conduct, experience its life as a story, and recognize its own death? On that meaning of who, the book never really answers the question.
This is not a trivial omission. It is a disciplinary settlement. Human genetics has spent a generation learning how politically explosive any account of human difference can become. Reich’s book itself ends with chapters on genomic inequality, race, and identity; its publication ignited exactly the public controversy the field has learned to expect. The caution is understandable. It also means that genetics investigates differences among already-human populations with far more vigor than it investigates the structure that makes every one of those populations human.
The result is emblematic of modernity. We can reconstruct where almost every strand of our ancestry traveled while declining to define the traveler.
Every civilization inherits the same impossible assignment. It must tell its children where the world came from, but it must also tell them what kind of creature has awakened inside it. The first question is cosmological. The second is anthropological. A creation myth answers both at once.
Modernity has answers in abundance. Physics offers an early universe. Geology gives the Earth a deep past. Evolution supplies common descent. Genetics reconstructs ancestral populations. Archaeology follows their tools, hearths, pigments, and bones. The modern origin account is more precise than any told before it.
And yet modernity has no creation myth.
It has a chronology of matter, a genealogy of organisms, and a travel log of populations. It has no public story joining those facts to the inward event of becoming human. It cannot tell us when a creature became a self; why knowledge carries shame; why mortality is different from simply dying; why a life must be narrated to be possessed; or why mind should feel at once native to the cosmos and exiled within it. The authorized account arrives at the human body and falls silent before the human condition.
This absence is historically strange. Modernity is not the first civilization with skeptics. It is the first to organize public reality as though no creation myth may be true for everyone. Its institutional settlement divides the old work among separate jurisdictions: science owns publicly admissible fact; religion becomes optional conviction; ethics becomes procedure or preference; identity is supplied piecemeal by nation, market, ideology, and therapy. Charles Taylor describes the secular condition as the change from belief as the unchallenged setting of life to belief as one option among others (A Secular Age, pp. 2–3). Marcel Gauchet names the same structural change an exit from religion—not the disappearance of believers, but the end of religion as the common organization of material, social, and mental life (The Disenchantment of the World).
What disappeared was not one obsolete explanation of species. It was the integration layer. Modernity kept every file and lost the operating system.
A creation myth explains what happened that still makes us human#
The word myth has become a synonym for falsehood because modernity reads sacred narrative as a failed scientific paper. That category error makes the old stories look foolish and the modern vacuum look like maturity.
A living myth does not primarily answer, “What happened first?” It answers, “What happened that still makes us what we are?” Mircea Eliade’s compact definition begins with sacred history and creation: myth tells how a reality came into being and makes that primordial event present again (Myth and Reality, pp. 5–6, 18–20). Bronisław Malinowski, writing from ethnography rather than theology, called myth “a reality lived” and a practical charter for ritual, morality, and social order (Myth in Primitive Psychology, pp. 81–89).
That is what a creation myth does. It joins:
- the substance of the cosmos to the substance of the body;
- the origin of mind to the origin of language and social life;
- a primordial event to present ritual;
- knowledge to duty;
- death to the meaning of a life;
- the history of a people to the order of the world.
Ernst Cassirer called the human an animal symbolicum because man does not confront a naked physical universe. He inhabits a world mediated by language, myth, art, and religion (An Essay on Man, pp. 24–26). Jan Assmann carried the claim from person to civilization: cultural memory binds fixed events of the past to texts, images, rites, values, institutions, and the group’s self-image (“Collective Memory and Cultural Identity”, pp. 129–132). A creation myth is therefore neither decorative literature nor primitive astronomy. It is the memory architecture through which a society knows what its members are.
Modern science excels because it refuses this integration. It isolates a tractable question, strips away value and purpose, and makes the remaining variables answerable to public evidence. The same discipline that makes science powerful prevents any scientific result from becoming a creation myth by itself. Max Weber saw the consequence clearly: science can describe a world while remaining unable to answer, “What shall we do and how shall we live?” (“Science as a Vocation”, pp. 139–155).
The problem is not that science fails to provide values. It is that modernity mistakes science’s methodological silence for an answer: nothing beyond the mechanism is real.
Genesis remembers the human threshold#
Read Genesis 2–3 as an account of speciation and it loses to a page of modern biology. Read it as an account of the human condition and its sequence becomes exact.
The human begins in continuity with nature. Adam is formed from adamah, the ground, and the animals are formed from that same ground (Genesis 2:7, 2:19). The breath of life does not install a Greek ghost into dead machinery; it makes the earthling a living being. The human works before the Fall, tending and keeping the garden (2:15). Embodiment, animal kinship, and world-making belong to the creature from the beginning.
Then comes the change.
Genesis places two sentences on either side of it. Before the fruit, the man and woman are naked and unashamed (2:25). After it, their eyes open and they know they are naked (3:7). No body has changed. The body has become an object to the mind that inhabits it. The creature sees itself as seen. It makes a sign from leaves, hides, speaks an account of its conduct, shifts blame, receives judgment, and enters moral history.
This is why the fruit is from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Carol Newsom shows that the biblical phrase names evaluative judgment: the capacity to perceive alternatives and decide among them, a discernment elsewhere withheld from children and required of kings (“Rational Agency and the Birth of the Human”, pp. 116–126). The serpent’s promise is not simply exposed as a lie. God confirms its center: “the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil” (3:22). Humanity crosses the cognitive boundary toward divinity while remaining barred from divine life.
The result is the permanent hybrid condition of man: animal and more than animal, earthly and godlike, capable of judgment but unable to escape death. Work becomes toil against resistant ground. Sexual difference becomes shame, desire, and domination. Finitude becomes mortality because the creature can now anticipate its return to dust. Fredrik Westerlund’s phenomenological reading calls the opened eyes “the birth of social self-consciousness” (“Exposed: On Shame and Nakedness”, pp. 2195–2221).
The Fall is not the moment an immortal primate acquires a bad allele. It is the moment experience becomes experience for a represented self. Sensation becomes my sensation. The body becomes my exposed body. Memory becomes my past; choice, my fault; death, the end awaiting me.
Genesis explains who we are and where we came from because it narrates the birth of the “who.”
Creation myths place mind inside the cosmos#
Genesis belongs to a much larger human project. The traditions do not secretly tell one identical story. They recognize the same problem: human origins must explain body, mind, norm, labor, mortality, and cosmos together.

In the Babylonian Atrahasis, human beings are clay joined to the flesh and blood of a slain god. Material composition, intelligence, labor, and cosmic order enter in a single act (Atrahasis, Tablet I, lines 189–241). In Adapa, wisdom approaches the divine boundary but eternal life remains withheld: cognition and mortality again define the human interval (William Hallo, “Adapa Reconsidered”, pp. 267–275).
Plato’s myth in the Protagoras divides the threshold with unusual precision. Epimetheus leaves humanity naked, unshod, unbedded, and unarmed. Prometheus steals fire and technical wisdom, giving humans speech, shelter, clothing, agriculture, and worship. Yet clever creatures still cannot form a city. Zeus must distribute aidōs and dikē—shame or reverence, and justice—to everyone (Protagoras 320c–323c). Animal equipment, technical intelligence, and norm-governed social existence are three different achievements.
The K’iche’ Popol Vuh supplies a still more distant parallel. Earlier creations fail because they cannot speak, remember, or properly address the makers. The successful humans, fashioned from yellow and white maize, possess speech and extraordinary understanding. Their knowledge becomes so complete that the gods cloud their vision “like breath upon the face of a mirror” (Allen Christenson’s edition, pp. 177–186). Genesis moves upward from unreflexive innocence to dangerous knowledge; the Popol Vuh moves downward from dangerous omniscience to bounded human sight. Both draw the border between human and divine through consciousness.
These are creation myths because they make the universe a place in which man can recognize himself. Body is cosmic substance. Mind has a location in cosmic order. Knowledge changes the kind of life a creature can lead. Normativity is constitutive of the creature, not a moral sticker added after biology is finished. The myths disagree about the gods, but they agree that explaining the human requires more than locating his bones.
They also agree on the structure of the crossing. Humanity begins as a creature continuous with the rest of life. A gift, theft, initiation, or breach then produces reflexive knowledge, symbolic culture, moral judgment, and conscious mortality. The old creation myths get the human definition right because they are memories of the transition. Their images differ because memory travels through different languages, landscapes, rituals, and gods. Their common architecture survives because the event being remembered was the architecture of the remembering self.
Memory here does not mean a stenographic report passed unchanged from a witness. It means an identity-bearing reconstruction that preserves the transition’s relational shape: body becoming visible to mind, knowledge becoming answerability, mortality becoming a personal horizon. The story is inherited, but it is also renewed whenever a child becomes a person.
Out of Africa is a travel log#
The Out-of-Africa model is one of the triumphs of modern historical science. “Travel log” is not an insult. It is a description of the questions the model magnificently answers.
The older picture of a single East African birthplace and one decisive exit has become a braided itinerary. The Jebel Irhoud fossils pushed early Homo sapiens deep into North Africa and revealed a mosaic of modern and archaic anatomy (Hublin et al. 2017). Eleanor Scerri and colleagues replaced a bounded cradle with interlinked populations distributed across the continent (Scerri et al. 2018). Aaron Ragsdale and colleagues now model a “weakly structured stem”: populations that diverged and reconnected through long-running gene flow (Ragsdale et al. 2023).
The exits multiply too. Fossils at Misliya in the Levant and Al Wusta in Arabia record dispersals long before the expansion that supplied most ancestry in living non-African populations (Hershkovitz et al. 2018; Groucutt et al. 2018). The travelers encountered and mixed with other humans. Neanderthal and Denisovan segments remain in living genomes; early Eurasian genomes place the principal shared Neanderthal admixture pulse around 45,000–49,000 years ago (Sümer et al. 2025). Climate and ecology add corridors, refugia, forests, and deserts to the route (Hallett et al. 2025).
The verbs of this literature are diverged, fragmented, reconnected, migrated, mixed, expanded, occupied, and went extinct. Its inputs include allele frequencies, linkage disequilibrium, fossil morphology, sediments, artifacts, and paleoclimate. Its outputs include population splits, effective sizes, admixture fractions, dates, and routes.
None of those variables is first-person experience.
The travel log keeps improving. It now contains a continent-wide departure lounge, repeated early exits, changing ecological corridors, encounters with Neanderthals and Denisovans, and ancestral populations that divide and merge like rivers. But none of its instruments points at the event creation myths describe. Linkage disequilibrium can recover an ancient population split; it cannot detect the first creature for whom birth and death became a story. A perforated shell can establish ornamentation; it cannot recover what the ornament meant.
Out of Africa tells us the route. It does not tell us what it means to be human.
A migration map can locate the ancestors of the storyteller without explaining the emergence of the storyteller. It begins after its protagonist already exists. That is why the more exact the model becomes, the less it resembles Genesis: no single garden, no single couple, no unambiguous departure—only a braided geography of populations. It is genealogy without anthropogony, coordinates without cosmology.
Darwin gave us a mechanism, not an anti-myth#
Darwin is the hinge of this history, not its villain.
Natural selection destroyed the necessity of separate creation as a biological explanation. It showed how heritable differences, preserved and accumulated across enormous stretches of time, could produce adaptation and divergence. Darwin insisted that natural selection could produce “no great or sudden modification”; the difference in mind between humans and higher animals was “one of degree and not of kind” (On the Origin of Species, p. 206; The Descent of Man, vol. I, pp. 105–107).
Those propositions are in genuine conflict with a naive reading of Genesis as a recent, independent manufacture of immutable species. They do not entail atheism, nihilism, or the reduction of experience to mechanism. Darwin repeatedly refused that inflation of his theory.
Writing to Asa Gray in 1860, he said he had “no intention to write atheistically,” could not view the universe and human nature as brute force, and agreed that his views were “not at all necessarily atheistical” (Darwin to Gray, 22 May 1860). In 1879 he called it absurd to doubt that someone could be both an ardent theist and an evolutionist; for himself, agnostic was usually the most accurate term (Darwin to Fordyce, 7 May 1879). The first edition of Origin closes not with cosmic contempt but with “grandeur in this view of life” (Darwin 1859, p. 490).
Most revealing is Darwin’s answer to Mary Boole, who asked what common descent meant for moral and religious questions. He could not see how the genetic derivation of organisms bore on her difficulties; those questions required “widely different evidence from Science” or the “inner consciousness” (Darwin to Boole, 14 December 1866). Darwin understood the jurisdiction of his mechanism. He had changed the explanation of organic form. He had not abolished every other way a human being could know.
The classroom cliché of “Darwin versus creation myths” therefore hides the decisive transformation. The original scientific conflict concerned species and mechanism. The larger cultural conflict became creation myth versus no creation myth: an integrated account of the human condition against a mechanism promoted into a verdict on everything that mechanisms omit.
How natural selection became an anti-myth#
Natural selection is not nihilism. It becomes an anti-myth when a biological mechanism is promoted into a complete metaphysics.
The transformation took more than Darwin. Late nineteenth-century advocates extended the authority of science from a method into a jurisdiction over the whole of public reason. T. H. Huxley spoke of the “domination of Science” moving into new regions of thought (Huxley, “The Darwinian Hypothesis”). John William Draper and Andrew Dickson White supplied the durable warfare narrative in which science and religion were two contending powers (Draper 1874; White 1896). The story remains culturally powerful even though historians of science have shown how badly it flattens the alliances, mixed motives, and theological variety of the actual nineteenth century (Ronald Numbers, ed., Galileo Goes to Jail; Costică Brădățan and Ed Simon, eds., The Religion and Science Debate).
Once the warfare story is accepted, every victory of evolutionary explanation becomes a defeat for meaning. The creation myth is heard as a bundle of discredited empirical claims. Its anthropology, phenomenology, ritual logic, and moral cosmology are thrown out with special creation. Darwin’s limited mechanism becomes what Daniel Dennett later called a “universal acid,” eating through the conceptual vessels meant to contain it (Darwin’s Dangerous Idea, p. 63).
Jacques Monod gave the anti-myth its austere scripture. The “ancient covenant” between humanity and the cosmos was broken; man stood alone in an indifferent universe with destiny written nowhere (Chance and Necessity, pp. 173–180). Richard Dawkins’s blind watchmaker is unconscious, automatic, and without foresight (The Blind Watchmaker). Each proposition is intelligible as a refusal of design within biological explanation. Together they are easily heard as a total origin story whose revelation is that revelation never happened.
Creation myth says: because this happened, the world has this order and human life has this burden. The anti-myth says: nothing happened; some variants reproduced.
Its power lies in subtraction. It explains why no sacred rupture is required in the genealogy of the organism, then silently converts “not required by this explanation” into “not real.” No transcendence, no cosmic address, no qualitative human threshold, no truth in the old stories beyond the ingenuity of frightened animals consoling themselves. The myth Darwin displaced was not six-day creation alone. It was the cosmos understood as a moral address.
Mary Midgley saw the paradox: evolution had become “the creation myth of our age” precisely where it had been inflated beyond science to satisfy spiritual needs it officially denied (“Evolution as a Religion”). But it is a creation myth with the creation removed. It can tell us how one form follows another while treating the hunger for a story of human arrival as an error to be explained away.
Modernity has countless narratives—progress, nation, revolution, market, liberation, apocalypse. They are fragments of an exploded cosmology. None can authoritatively join matter, mind, history, duty, and death. Modernity has stories everywhere and no Genesis.
Evolution explains the machinery around consciousness, not the fact within it#
The anti-myth becomes weakest where the old creation myths become most precise: at the opened eyes.
Evolutionary explanation can show why an organism that discriminates stimuli, integrates information, remembers danger, models rivals, plans ahead, and reports internal states might leave more descendants. These are genuine achievements. They explain the adaptive history of functions associated with consciousness. They do not explain why performing any function should feel like something from within.
David Chalmers named this the hard problem: “the really hard problem of consciousness is the problem of experience” (“Facing Up to the Problem of Consciousness”). An account of binding, memory, global availability, or behavioral report can be complete at its own level while leaving untouched why the information is experienced. A selection history begins with a heritable phenotype that affects survival and reproduction. It can explain why that phenotype spreads. It cannot derive first-person presence from third-person function simply by adding ancestral time.
The distinction is not a supernatural trap laid for biology. It is the basic discipline of asking which question an explanation answers. Niko Tinbergen’s four questions—mechanism, development, adaptive function, and phylogeny—show that even within biology a trait requires different, noncompeting accounts (Tinbergen 1963). A phylogeny is not a mechanism; a survival function is not a developmental history. In the same way, the ancestry of a conscious organism is not yet an explanation of conscious experience.
Creation myths are aimed at the first-person rupture. Their characteristic materials—opened eyes, stolen fire, divine breath, speech, shame, wisdom, a forbidden boundary, the knowledge of death—belong to the phenomenology of a creature becoming present to itself. Modernity dismissed the myths for failing to explain the machinery. It then allowed the machinery to impersonate an explanation of the experience.
The human animal became explicable at precisely the moment the human condition became unintelligible.
The self is a story the self tells itself#
Human consciousness adds another problem to raw experience. We do not simply feel. We organize feeling around a protagonist extended through time.
Philosophy and psychology distinguish the minimal self—the immediate mineness of experience—from the autobiographical or narrative self that integrates remembered past, anticipated future, agency, obligation, and social identity (Shaun Gallagher 2000). EToC is principally a theory of the second threshold.1 It does not require us to turn animals or early hominins into insensible machines. It asks how experience became organized for a recursively represented “I.”
Endel Tulving called the capacity to place oneself subjectively in remembered past and possible future autonoetic consciousness (Tulving 1985). Once the self inhabits that time, death is no longer an event that happens to organisms. It is the foreknown ending of my story.
Jerome Bruner argued that autobiography helps constitute the self it appears merely to report: “we become the autobiographical narratives” through which we tell our lives (“Life as Narrative”). Paul Ricoeur made narrative identity the bridge between remaining the same thing and remaining answerable as a changing who (Oneself as Another, Studies Five and Six). Dan McAdams defines mature identity as an internalized and evolving life story that gives reconstructed past and imagined future unity and purpose (McAdams and McLean 2013).
The dependence runs deeper than literature. Children acquire autobiographical memory through social narration; later they draw on culturally available life scripts and master narratives to organize identity (Fivush et al. 2011). In split-brain experiments, Michael Gazzaniga’s left-hemisphere “interpreter” generates coherent explanations for actions whose real causes are unavailable to it (Roser and Gazzaniga 2004). Even Dennett’s deflationary materialism returns to a self understood as a “center of narrative gravity” (Dennett 1992).
This convergence matters. Story is not frosting applied to a completed mind. It is part of the machinery by which a distributed organism becomes one agent across time. The ego is a story the self tells itself; the self is stabilized through the telling.
A civilization therefore does not educate human beings only by giving them facts. It supplies the plots through which they become persons: origins, transgressions, obligations, exemplars, enemies, deaths, renewals, and ends. Creation myth gives the narrative animal its widest frame. It places an individual life inside the story of a people, and the people inside the life of the cosmos.
Modernity does the opposite. It tells storytelling animals that the truest account of themselves is the one purged of story. It calls the old inheritance false in the narrow scientific sense, then smuggles in the larger conclusion that the truths those stories addressed are bunk. The result is not freedom from myth. It is a narrative self deprived of a publicly credible narrative of selfhood.
Darwin was right about the slope; the saltationists were right about the door#
Darwinian continuity does not forbid a categorical human threshold. It tells us the threshold did not require a magical break in ancestry.
Nature contains phase changes everywhere. Temperature varies continuously while water passes into ice. A neuron receives graded inputs and then fires. A network accumulates activity and crosses into a new regime. In Global Neuronal Workspace models, conscious access is associated with a nonlinear “ignition” that makes information globally available (Mashour et al. 2020). Continuous parameters can produce a discontinuous system state.
Quantitative genetics has long formalized the same logic: a trait can be categorical in expression while resting on a continuously distributed underlying liability (Dempster and Lerner 1950). The threshold need not be encoded by one consciousness gene. Many graded capacities can jointly cross an organizational boundary.
Culture adds a second inheritance system. Skills, norms, symbols, rituals, and self-models descend with modification at a speed genes cannot match. High-fidelity social learning preserves an innovation so the next generation can begin where the last one ended—the cultural ratchet (Tomasello, Kruger, and Ratner 1993; Dean et al. 2012). Formal cultural-brain models identify conditions under which social learning, adaptive knowledge, brain size, group size, and life history enter an autocatalytic takeoff (Muthukrishna et al. 2018).
Culture also changes the world in which genes are selected. Niche-construction models show culturally produced environments altering selection, favoring new alleles, and creating new evolutionary dynamics (Laland, Odling-Smee, and Feldman 2001). Human metacognition itself is tuned through social interaction, instruction, and culturally inherited practices (Heyes et al. 2020).
The synthesis is straightforward:
- gradual genetic changes build a biological platform for memory, social inference, language, and metacognition;
- cultural practices recruit those capacities into recursive self-representation;
- the resulting self-model brings enormous advantages in planning, teaching, coalition, and control;
- culture then selects for brains that acquire, stabilize, and transmit the new mode more reliably;
- a rare and fragile state becomes a normal developmental destination.
The genotype can move by degrees while the phenotype crosses a door. Once a creature can represent its own representations, remember itself remembering, imagine itself in futures that do not yet exist, and tell another creature what kind of being it is, the change is categorical in lived organization even if every contributing allele has a continuous history.
Darwin was right about the slope. The saltationists were right about the door.
The archaeological mosaic is what a cultural threshold should leave#
The old “human revolution” model expected a compact package of modern behavior to appear suddenly around 40,000–50,000 years ago, especially in Europe. Archaeology has dismantled that picture. Pigment use, long-distance transport, projectile technologies, ornaments, drawing, regional traditions, and other markers appear at different times in different African populations. Some innovations disappear and later return. Sally McBrearty and Alison Brooks called this “the revolution that wasn’t” (McBrearty and Brooks 2000). Scerri and Manuel Will’s continent-wide review likewise finds spatially separate and historically contingent trajectories, not one complete behavioral-modernity package appearing at a single threshold (Scerri and Will 2023).
That mosaic belongs to the EToC mechanism.
Artifacts are indirect residues of mind. Preservation is radically uneven. Cultural innovations depend on teachers, networks, population size, ecology, and transmission fidelity. They can appear, die with a band, recur elsewhere, and spread long after their first invention. A categorical transition in recursive organization should not stamp an identical artifact kit across an entire continent at one date. It should produce experiments, local takeoffs, reversals, hybrids, and an eventual ratchet.
The failed hunt for a single archaeological box labeled modern mind reveals the mistake of looking for a population-wide inner event as though it were a diagnostic stone tool. A recursive self can be categorical as a system state while its material expressions remain mosaic, reversible, and demographically fragile.
This also explains why mythology matters as evidence. A blade records a cutting edge. Pigment records transport and use. An ornament records display and convention. A creation myth preserves what the transformation felt like and what a culture believed it had done to the human condition. The artifacts are residues of behavior. The myths are phenomenological archives.
EToC gives Darwin a creation myth and creation myth a mechanism#
The genius of the EVE Theory of Consciousness is that it refuses the false choice between Darwin and Genesis.
EToC begins with a claim about structure. What defines the distinctively human form of consciousness is recursion: a mind can represent the world, represent itself representing the world, and organize those nested representations around an “I” extended through remembered past and imagined future. That architecture turns perception into self-knowledge, appetite into a question of self-control, social expectation into norm, biological ending into conscious mortality, and events into a life. It answers Reich’s unanswered who: we are the animal whose experience has acquired a narrator.
In computational language, the phase change is a software update running on older biological hardware. But EToC adds the evolutionary loop that the metaphor usually omits: once the software reorganizes behavior, it changes the selective pressures on the hardware. Culture installs the new mode; selection makes the installation increasingly native.
The theory’s evolutionary and mythological claims follow from that definition. If recursive selfhood is a real structure, then its arrival was a real change in phenotype. If the structure is partly acquired through language, ritual, and narrative, culture was not an aftereffect of the new mind; it helped build and transmit it. And if early humans lived through the spread of that transition, their descendants would remember it in the medium best fitted to preserve an event in consciousness: creation myth.
EToC accepts Darwinian continuity all the way down. It does not insert an immaterial mutation or a special creation into the genome. Its weak form is a gene-culture coevolution model: recursive culture spread, transformed the fitness landscape, and selected for minds increasingly able to acquire and sustain recursive selfhood. Its stronger form locates the bootstrapping technology in female-led ritual and initiation—the “Eve” who first understands “I am,” then teaches the crossing to others through symbol, ordeal, altered state, and story. The serpent is not a zoological footnote. It belongs to the remembered technology of awakening.
The model joins four levels that modernity separated:

This is not Darwinian terminology placed beside Genesis. It is one causal loop viewed from outside and inside. Genes make a culturally educable nervous system. Ritual, language, and narrative organize that system into a recursive self. The new phenotype changes survival, mating, teaching, coalition, and child-rearing. Those pressures reshape the biological platform. Myth remembers the transition in the only form adequate to a narrative animal: as the story of how the world became human.
Creation myths are not corrupted population histories. They are memories of the phase transition by which a population history acquired a narrator.
The pieces were already waiting to be joined. Darwin showed why no genetic chasm was needed. Systems science shows how continuous inputs cross categorical thresholds. Gene-culture coevolution shows how learned practices become selective environments. Narrative psychology shows that selfhood is culturally coauthored. Genesis and the world’s creation myths describe, in symbolic form, the phenomenology of the crossing.
This is why the older philosophical stack does not have to be thrown away. For thousands of years, myth, theology, philosophy, ritual, and art asked how mind relates to body, matter, time, duty, sex, death, and cosmos. Natural selection did not answer those questions and prove them foolish. It answered a different question so powerfully that modernity forgot the difference.
The EToC frame lets us recover the archive without retreating from science. Genesis becomes neither a geology textbook nor an embarrassment. Plato’s myth becomes more than ornament. The Popol Vuh becomes more than exotic folklore. Each is a culture’s account of the human phenotype from within: the creature explaining to itself the threshold that made explanation possible.

A creation myth modernity can believe#
Modernity does not need to crawl back into a six-day cosmos. It needs to stop pretending that a mechanism of descent is an account of the human condition.
Out of Africa is true in the way a map can be true. Natural selection is true in the way a mechanism can be true. Neither becomes false when we notice that a map does not create its traveler and a mechanism does not explain the inward meaning of the thing it produces. The error was never Darwin. The error was turning Darwin’s magnificent answer into the only question respectable people were allowed to ask.
A scientifically credible creation myth must preserve continuity without abolishing arrival. It must accept the braided African genealogy, the absence of a genetic magic wand, and the gradual construction of the nervous system. It must also recognize the categorical difference between an organism that has experiences and a person who can say, “These experiences are mine; this was my past; that will be my death; this is how I ought to live.”
EToC supplies that missing Genesis. It says the human animal did not leave nature. Nature produced a creature able to turn back upon itself, model its own modeling, inherit a symbolic world, and remake the selective environment through culture. The crossing was biological in substrate, cultural in transmission, phenomenological in experience, and mythic in memory.
That synthesis restores transcendence without using it as an escape hatch from matter. Transcendence is the event matter performs when it becomes able to represent the cosmos, judge its own conduct, anticipate its death, and ask why it exists. The human is not separated from the cosmos by a supernatural wall. The human is the place where the cosmos becomes a problem to itself.
Creation myths remembered that fact long before modernity learned to date the bones. Their truth was never that species arrived without ancestors. Their truth was that something happened: eyes opened, nakedness appeared, wisdom crossed a boundary, death became knowable, and the animal began to live as a story.
Darwin gives us the slope. Genesis remembers the door. EToC lets us see that they belong to the same journey.
